I was inspired to make this striped cotton cardi when I learned some family members were taking a summer holiday in Cornwall. My husband and I love Cornwall, and spent a wonderful week there over Christmas some years ago. We enjoyed walking along the rugged coasts and cliffs with their bracing winds – even with the occasional rain!

We spent quite a bit of time imagining where Poldark characters might have lived, and were thrilled to have the opportunity to visit Perranporth Beach, overlooking which Winston Graham wrote the famous Poldark novels that I’d read a couple of times, long before the popular 2015 BBC TV adaptation.

So in designing this garment I was thinking that, though August would undoubtedly be mostly warm, there could well be some windy days and cooler evenings when a long-sleeved cardigan could come in useful. A playful, stripey, seaside feel was what I had in mind.

Most of the yarns I used here were Paintbox Yarns Cotton 4 ply from LoveCrafts which comes in a great range of colours, and is a pleasure to work with. I swatched quite a bit before starting and landed eventually on a 2.5 mm hook to get the neat kind of effect I was looking for as I find the double crochet stitch can result in the work sometimes feeling a bit gappy and somewhat dominated by ridges. I’m really pleased with how this worked out and am delighted to see so many holiday photos of the cardigan being worn.

I’ll get the pattern up as soon as I can.  Meanwhile, if you want to be sure not to miss it, you can subscribe using the form below and you’ll automatically be notified when any new posts or patterns are added to this site 🙂
