Sally: Chevron Crochet Baby Cardigan & Matinee Jacket

Sally is a modern crochet baby cardigan or matinee jacket. I love using self-striping yarns for this style, as I think the stripes work so well with the chevron technique.

I particularly love the retro 1970s feel of the browns and oranges, though the chevron is in fact a timeless classic used by designers still today.

At first I was a bit daunted by idea of trying it, but I needn’t have been so concerned! It isn’t particularly difficult, but does need strict counting – particularly when increasing. But soon you get into the rhythm of the stitch and it becomes easier.

The chevron may also be referred to as a ripple in some patterns, and the overall effect is created by forming peaks and valleys at regular intervals throughout the work.

The peaks are formed by working multiple stitches into the same stitch from the previous row, thus forcing the work outwards. (This is similar to forming the corners of a raglan sweater or cardigan.) The valleys are formed by crocheting multiple stitches together, thereby pulling the work in.

I’ve used an adaptation of this stitch in Allegra, which also has slightly different lines and optional sleeves.

Here are a few examples of the Sally cardigan that I’ve made in different sizes with different yarns, and a few progress shots to show how the garment develops.

The samples shown here are all made using yarns from Ice yarns and are listed below:

  • Magic Light in turquoise shades – fnt2-22018 – yarn weight 3: DK – 100% acrylic
  • Camilla Cotton Magic in Pink Shades, Orange, Camel, Beige, Cream – fnt2-47018 – yarn weight 2: Fine, Sport, Baby – 100% Mercerised Cotton
  • I can’t seem to find the colour code for the pastel-ish pink/orange/beige yarn at present, so I’m wondering if it’s out of stock or discontinued. It was from the same Camilla Cotton Magic range as the one listed above. If I find it, I’ll add it here.

The pattern will be written up and published here when I get a moment 🙂
