Crochet Therapy

The Many Mental Health Benefits of Crochet

Very often I hear people saying they use crochet as a way to deal with mental health issues, to alleviate feelings of stress and anxiety, or as a way into greater mindfulness.

So I was interested to come across this paper via the site of the American Counselling Association specifically on the topic of Crochet Therapy.

Here are the benefits they refer to:

  1. Knitting and Crochet Relieve Depression
  2. Crafting Reduces Anxiety
  3. Projects Build Self-Esteem
  4. Crafting May Reduce or Postpone Dementia
  5. Knit or Crochet Through Insomnia
  6. Relaxation Reduces Irritability and Restlessness
  7. Crafting as Prayer
  8. Yarncrafting Builds Community
  9. Crafting Helps with Grief Processing
  10. Yarncrafting Has Stress-Busting Benefits

This all resonates with me as crochet is one of the first things I turn to when I’m feeling stressed or overwhelmed myself. I find it hugely calming.

Happy crafting!
